Not your father's Prince of Persia : Battles of Prince of Persia
I have never owned a hand-held game system until my sons got a DS Lite for my 40th birthday. Prince of Persia Battles is the first game I played, and coming from a table-top wargaming background, I thought this game was excellent.
Playing as a general of an ancient army, you maneuver small, medium and large size units ranging from archers, spearmen, swordsmen, cavalry, and even war elephants against an opposing general and army in a wide variety of offensive and defensive missions. Your ability to command is effected by how many cards your general rates every turn. You can play these cards for their order value, i.e. a selected card may allow you to give orders to 3 of your 12 army units for a given phase of the turn. Or, you can play a card for an effect, i.e. enhance the defense and armor values of all units within command range of the general.
As you progress through the story driven campaign, your earn new cards after battle victories. Some of these cards, which you can trade with other players via wi-fi, are very unique and provide very interesting and colorful ways to going about winning the day on the battlefield.
I like the artwork alot and have to say the game designers did a great job of creating very historical looking units. For those of you looking for something a little more "epic", don't worry. There is an evil army that brings various monsters and giants to the field of battle. Don't underestimate the enemy giants. Yes, they look brutishly stupid but their ability to hurl huge boulders at great distances in the midst of your peasant archers makes for a bad day!

Nearly perfect : Tomb Raider Trilogy
While we wait for the next official installment of Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics has compiled its first three Tomb Raider games in one convenient package. The result is a compilation that is 1/3 amazing, 1/3 good, and 1/3 mediocre.
Legend is the oldest of the three and it really shows its age on the PS3 version. The upscaling on the PS3 looks really weird thus making it the ugliest of the three. The game is also criminally short with 7 main stages that take mere minutes to finish once you get the flow. It's the most diverse of the three featuring bike riding (yuck), turret shooting, and lots of action sequences. Variety may be the spice of life but Legend is not what Tomb Raider fans necessarily want in a Tomb Raider game, Anniversary explains it why.
Released in 2007, Tomb Raider Anniversary is a remake of the original 1996 classic Tomb Raider. The crown jewel of this collection, Anniversary is clearly the game with the most polish of the three. The game boils down essentially what a Tomb Raider game should be, lots of platforming and death defying stunts, little to no human-on-human violence, and an excellent sense of being alone in a desolate place. Of the three it sits in the middle for best looking, it is upscaled much better than Legend with a much cleaner look. While nostalgia freaks of the original scoff at Anniversary's trimmings of the original, the end result faithfully recreates the original while brining it in to the modern age. With less long stretches and non memorable areas removed.
Tomb Raider Underworld is the native HD game of the three and story-wise is a continuation of Legend's tale. While it is the best looking, Underworld sets itself as the worst of the three games for various reasons. Lara has more animations in this game but none of them feel right. The controls are iffy at best and glitches are everywhere. You would think that the developers would have fixed Underworld's numerous flaws by now but that's not the case. Falling 15 feet seems to mean doom for Lara in this game and there are times where you'll even be stuck in mid-air for no reason. Again this is to be blamed by adding a bunch of animations that did not need to be done. They were going for a more organic, realistic game but this is not the case. On the Xbox 360, Tomb Raider Underworld got two extra levels as DLC, none of them appear on this PS3 re-release which really makes the game and package half-assed. Add to the glitches and bugs, Underworld does not have even a third of bonus content that Legend and Anniversary posses. No Time Trials, no Croft Manor puzzle stage, no unlockable costumes.
The compilation is priced right and you'll get some fine adventuring here to last for a while. Legend and Anniversary will keep you replaying stages (especially Anniversary's Time Attack on its later stages) and extra content while you'll probably just fly through Underworld and never touch it again.

CONTROLLER
If you get this for the Mac, the box for the game says that the Logitech Dual Action or the Logitech Rumblepad 2 are supported, I had a steel series USB remote and it does NOT work right. Regardless, you will want a controller to play the game because the keyboard isn't gonna work too well. In fact, it makes gameplay next to impossible. I got the Logitech Dual Action and it works but the analog stick only lets you do forward, backwards, left and right and it will NOT let you do any other movements on the analog controller such as the in between areas like between the left and the forward controller inputs.
THE GAME
I have played this game before, it is pretty good. I have always been a fan of the Prince of Persia games. They are probably my favorite game franchise. I hope they release more of the PoP games for Mac. This game is probably not as popular as the others though. I am looking forward to The Forgotten Sands.
GRAPHICS
I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch, 2.4GHz, 4GB of Ram and the GeForce 320M. It is very skippy and not smooth with the technical specs listed, I have bumped the settings down to the minimum and it still plays crappy at this level. Starting to think there is no hope of getting this game to play smooth :(
